Light from Light

Light from Light is an international touring exhibition of contemporary art from Australia and China.

Between October 2010 – January 2012, the exhibition was on display at the State Library of Queensland, while a duplicate of the exhibition toured throughout China, visiting the Shanghai Library (3/11/2010—7/2/2011), National Library of China and National Art Museum of China (29/4/2011—30/6/2011), and Hangzhou Public Library (14/7/2011—18/9/2011).  Following the international tour, Light from Light – REPRISE a summary of the exhibition was held at MAAP SPACE (6/12/2012 – 22/2/2013)

Light from Light is designed specifically for library spaces. The exhibition features artworks themed around the idea and properties of light, as interpreted by Australian, Chinese and European artists. A collection of light-inspired and light-generating artworks are displayed throughout library collection spaces, reading rooms and public areas. Artworks include a large outdoor solar-powered sculpture, neon art objects, light-sculptures, sounds generated by the sun and illuminated texts. Light from Light artists are (from Australia) Archie Moore, Eugene Carchesio, Grant Stevens, David Haines & Joyce Hinterding, Janet Burchill & Jennifer McCamley, (from Europe) Josef Strau, (from China) Zhang Peili, Wang Peng, Pak Sheung Chuen, Lin Tianmiao and Wang Gongxin.

The 128-page full-colour publication traces MAAP’s major exhibition Light from Light across 5 international venues. Featuring essays by Pauline Yao (curator M+ Museum of Visual Culture, HK) and Kim Machan (Light from Light curator), with foreword by Caroline Turner (Senior Research Fellow, ANU and co-founder of APT).

The catalogue was officially launched at MAAP SPACE by Lea Giles-Peters (State Library of Queensland, State Librarian, 2000-2011) on 6th December 2012. The exhibition Light from Light – REPRISE, held at MAAP SPACE, presents a number of Light from Light artworks amongst documentation from the two-year touring show.

Light from Light visited the Shanghai Libary from the 3rd of November 2010 until the 7th of February 2011, and was presented concurrently at the State Library of Queensland.
