Shuxia Chen, Sydney based art historian and curator, received the 2020 China Professional Placements: MAAP-Media Art Asia Pacific in partnership with OCAT Shanghai, from the Australia Council for the Arts. With the support of this grant, Shuxia has been working closely with MAAP Director Kim Machan, curator of the upcoming exhibition “Refocusing on the Medium: The Rise of East Asia Video Art”. It will be the first exhibition to assemble key protagonists that initiated experiments with the medium of video originating from Japan, Korea, China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. The exhibition proposes a re-examination of the artists approach to the video medium rising from East Asia and contributes to the global history of video art as a transnational contemporary art medium. The exhibition is opening at OCAT Shanghai on 27th December 2020 and continues until 21 March 2021. Prevailing through the unprecedented challenges of 2020, this exhibition highlights positive and enduring relationships across our region in the visual arts and culture sector.
With her extensive curatorial and museum experience in both China and Australia, Shuxia is strengthening communications between MAAP-Media Art Asia Pacific and OCAT Shanghai and enhancing the smooth operation toward the successful opening of our video art exhibition.
